Book Reviews Are My Knowledge Database

I am an avid book reader who reads for enjoyment and to gain knowledge. If I am absorbed in a book you will find me reading way into the night and wee hours of the morning. This book review page is my personal reference library. The structure of the book reviews is as follows:

  • Star Ratings
    • Joy – How enjoyable the book is to read from a writing style or storytelling or flow? The higher the rating the more likely I will read the book again in the future
    • Usefulness – How useful is the book for it’s intended audience? The higher the rating the chances are I will reference the book to implement or tackle a situation
    • Ease – How easy is the book to read? A high rating means the book is easy to read, understand and absorb.
  • Summary
  • Take Away(s)

Why do I write book reviews?

Not all books are suitable for all situations

There are many books written about entrepreneurship. Not all of them are helpful for every situation. In the take away section of the book review I document my thoughts. They are mainly my own impression on how the ideas in the books can be implemented in my various business.

Writing book reviews helps me hone my writing skills

Analysing, reviewing and critiquing books is a skill. I have always found that the best way to hone a skill is through practice. Writing it in a blog format forces me to keep my writing sharp and concise.

Practice the art of focus

I have skimmed through books from time to time. Reading a book with the intention of reviewing makes me pay a little extra attention. While it is not the Deep Work that Cal Newport talks about it helps build the muscles that will ignite the deep work when the time is right.
